Law enforcement in the Lone Star State will increase their presence on the roads and enforce speed limits more strictly during “Operation Slow Down,” according to TxDOT.
Operation Slowdown was launched on July 18 alongside the “Be Safe. Drive Smart” campaign. TxDOT says the speed awareness campaign urges drivers to slow down and drive into the conditions to help save lives.
Transportation officials said they are working with Texas law enforcement agencies across the state to strengthen enforcement of speed limits through Aug. 2, 2026.
In addition to writing more tickets, TxDOT said law enforcement vehicles will spend additional time driving on the roads “to remind motorists what safe speeding looks like.”
According to TxDOT, speed played a role in more than 150,000 traffic crashes in Texas in 2025, killing 1,247 people and seriously injuring 5,652.

- Increase the following distance when traffic is heavy, or when the roads are smooth
- Pay attention to changing speed limits, especially in work zones and school zones
- Remember, fines double for speeding in active work zones and school zones
- Always wear your seat belt – drivers and passengers – day and night. It is your best protection in the event of an accident
