Leaving little doubt that left-wing politics trumps the rule of law in these parts, New York State Chief Justice Rowan Wilson has just appointed far-left actress Cynthia Nixon to help select future members of the Supreme Court.
She’s not a lawyer. She has only played one on television — and yet that, coupled with her far-left cred, appears to be enough to qualify her for the Judicial Nominations Commission, where she will recommend judges to serve on the Court of Appeals..
One-party rule has made this country much more dysfunctional.
Wilson himself became chief justice only because legislators flatly refused to accept anything but a far-left partisan to the position.
They directly assassinated the highly qualified Hector Lasalle, handpicked by Governor Kathy Hochul, because he would not commit to bending the law to impose their agenda without having to actually pass it into law.
True, Wilson is a lawyer (unlike Nixon) and even served on the Supreme Court before becoming chief justice, but he campaigned inappropriately for legislation (which led to an ethics complaint) and against long prison sentences.
He even rebuked judges for using harsh language against brutal criminals, whose cause he championed.
This is not the kind of impartiality expected of judges, let alone those who serve on the state’s highest court.
But it is precisely such biases that made him so attractive to left-wing lawmakers.
Now he has tapped Nixon, who ran for government on a far-left platform in 2018, to help select future Supreme Court justices.
She may not know the first thing about the state constitution, the law in general, or what makes a good coroner, but she’s gained solid credibility on the far left — and that’s all that matters.
Now she has real power: Governors can only choose from among the commission’s nominees to appoint new justices to the state Supreme Court.
The dirty games that installed Wilson as Chief Justice have already turned the Supreme Court into gerrymandering, and are now likely to become even more contemptuous of the letter and even the spirit of the law.
The hard left continues to make more progress in ensuring that no Democratic vote can remove it from power: Pray for New York.
