My thanks to the State Department for putting an end to the city’s International Affairs Commissioner Ana Maria Archila’s attempt to meet Amir Saeed Iravani, Iran’s ambassador to the United Nations, even at a time when America and Iran were at war – but this issue poses a challenge to Mayor Zahran Mamdani: Does he have the nerve to break with the openly anti-American factions of the Democratic Socialists of America?
Mamdani tried to downplay the shameful incident, insisting that Archila did not have permission to make such contact, yet he did not fire her or impose any discipline on her.

Which raises the question whether he Prefers the theocratic regime in Tehran over the US government.

Archila, for example, has brazenly hijacked the Office of International Affairs, turning it into a client agency for the DSA’s international agenda.
This is confirmed by an internal OIA memo – revealed by City Journal – which states that diplomatic outreach “focuses… on deepening relations with foreign leaders who share Mamdani’s worldview” – a view allied with the DSA.
Traditionally, the office has sought to cultivate global relationships between sister cities, share best practices, attract foreign business and support the city’s relations with the diplomatic community (including collecting occasional parking fines from law-breaking diplomats).
Reaching out to Iran and the Maduro regime that has destroyed Venezuela, as Archila also tried to do, is a completely different matter, and a despicable matter.
If the mayor does not authorize or support Archila’s plan to sit down with Iran’s representative to the United Nations, he should fire her.
