Egypt’s historic campaign in the 2026 World Cup finals came to a painful end on Tuesday after the Pharaohs squandered a two-goal lead to lose 3-2 to defending champions Argentina in the round of 16.
Yasser Ibrahim and Mostafa Zico put Egypt in a stunning 2-0 lead at Atalanta, while goalkeeper Mostafa Shebeir saved a Lionel Messi penalty in a stunning first-half display.
But Argentina staged a devastating late comeback, with Cristian Romero scoring in the 80th minute, Messi equalizing four minutes later, and then Enzo Fernandez scoring the winner in stoppage time to send the defending champions into the quarter-finals.
Egypt’s exit was heartbreaking, but its campaign remains the most successful in the country’s World Cup history. The Pharaohs achieved their first ever finals win against New Zealand, reached the knockout rounds for the first time, and beat Australia on penalties to qualify for the round of 16.
Egypt started the match fearlessly against one of football’s most decorated teams.
After absorbing early Argentine pressure, the Pharaohs created the first dangerous opportunity in the seventh minute when Mohamed Salah sent a cross from the right side to Ibrahim, who was unable to convert it from close range.
Ibrahim did not commit any error after eight minutes.
Marwan Attia sent a precise cross into the area, and the Egyptian defender rose to the highest level to head past Emiliano Martinez, giving the Pharaohs an exciting 1-0 lead.
Argentina responded quickly and won a penalty kick in the 19th minute after Leandro Paredes fell inside the penalty area.
Messi took the lead, but Shebbir made one of the best saves of the tournament, diving to deny the Argentina captain and maintain Egypt’s advantage.
The save raised Egypt’s level further as Argentina continued to press. Schubert made another great save from Alexis McAllister’s header from close range, while Messi hit the post from a free kick in the 30th minute.
The Egyptian team made a second substitution after Imam Ashour was injured, with Hamdi Fathi replacing him.
Argentina started the second half offensively, but Egypt’s defense remained disciplined. The Pharaohs thought they had doubled their lead in the 58th minute when Zico scored, but the goal was disallowed by the Video Assistant Referee after an error by Attia in the build-up.
Zico was booked for removing his shirt in celebration before the decision was confirmed. But Egypt did not wait long to score the second goal.
In the 67th minute, Haysem Hassan sent in a brilliant cross from the right flank, and Zico finished the ball skillfully to make it 2-0 and put Egypt within striking distance of one of the greatest victories in the country’s football history.
Egypt almost added the third goal in the 77th minute when substitute Mahmoud Trezeguet found space inside the penalty area, but his shot went wide of the goal.
That missed opportunity proved costly.
Argentina reduced the gap in the 80th minute through Romero, who scored with a powerful header from inside the penalty area to reduce the gap.
Four minutes later, Messi equalized for Argentina. The striker found space inside Egypt’s penalty area and fired a free shot past Shebeir to make the score 2-2.
As the match approached extra time, Argentina scored the winning goal in the second minute of stoppage time.
Fernandes stepped into the penalty area to head home from close range, completing a dramatic comeback and breaking the hearts of the Egyptians.
Egypt took the lead in the remaining minutes, but was unable to equalize again, so Argentina maintained its 3-2 win.
Argentina will now face the winner of Switzerland and Colombia in the quarter-finals.
For Egypt, the result brings an end to a campaign that will nonetheless be remembered as a breakthrough moment. The Pharaohs showed that they can compete with some of football’s strongest teams, as they came minutes away from eliminating the world champions.
It will be difficult to accept the loss, especially after Egypt’s outstanding performance in the first half and their 2-0 lead. But Hossam Hassan’s team left the tournament having made history and given Egyptian fans an unforgettable World Cup campaign.
