England holds off Mexico to reach quarterfinals in World Cup thriller

Jude Bellingham remained one of England’s biggest players at this summer’s World Cup as he scored twice, and Harry Kane sealed the win with a 60th-minute penalty as the Three Lions overcame Mexico in a 3-2 win to advance to the quarter-finals.

England became the first team to defeat Mexico at the Estadio Azteca – referred to simply as the Azteca by soccer fans – since 2013, when Mexico lost to Honduras in the fourth round of CONCACAF qualifying for the 2014 World Cup.

But the Three Lions had no easy path to victory on Sunday night, at the High Castle in Mexico City, as they played most of the second half with ten men, allowing Mexico to equalize by one goal in the 69th minute after taking a 3-1 lead.

The Three Lions will now face Norway in the quarter-finals, after beating Brazil at MetLife Stadium earlier in the day.

Bellingham scored his fourth and fifth World Cup goals two minutes apart, with the first coming in the 36th minute to give England a 1-0 lead. The English star scored the second goal in the 38th minute when he shot a ball from close range.

Julian Quinones reduced the deficit to one goal in the 42nd minute when Mexico capitalized from a free kick.

Jarrell Quansah received a red card in the 54th minute after a random tackle that ended in injury to the leg of a Mexican player, forcing England to play with only ten men for the rest of the match.

Kane gave the Three Lions some insurance when he scored from the penalty spot in the 60th minute, the winning goal.

Raul Jimenez scored a goal in the 69th minute to put Mexico within one goal, but England blocked Mexico’s shot, which witnessed several close shots that almost led to an equalizer.
