New York — Two people dressed in black were arrested after they climbed to the top of the Empire State Building, held up a sign and appeared to propose marriage.
The couple, identified as Angela Nicolaou and Evan Berkus, were seen holding a pro-peace banner at the top of the tower. It seemed to read: “When the power of love overcomes the love of power, the world knows peace.”
This quote is often attributed to guitarist Jimi Hendrix, but was actually said by British politician William Gladstone in the 19th century.
Two people dressed in black climbed to the top of the transmitter in the Empire State Building.
It was not immediately clear how the two adventurers were able to free climb the metal structure that serves the tower, the broadcast antenna, and the red anti-collision beacon above the building.
After spending some time at the summit, the pair began their descent shortly after.
Berkus then proposed to Nicolau and pulled out a ring. After saying “yes,” Nicolaou admired her new engagement ring and wore it while she was out.
Police officers who climbed the tower met the two and took them into custody shortly before 1pm
It happened when the couple descended from the tower of the 1,454-foot Empire State Building.
The building’s tower is 1,454 feet above the ground.
Police said the banner was recovered. Empire State Building rules prohibit masks and costumes.
Nicolau and Berkus are known for their daring climbs around the world. In fact, they were profiled in the 2024 documentary “Skywalkers: A Love Story,” currently available on Nexflix.
