Boston Celtics legend and Hall of Famer Robert Parish didn’t mince words Monday when asked about the Celtics potentially trading Jaylen Brown in the next few days.
“That would be a serious misjudgment for Brad Stevens, management and ownership,” Robert Parish told SiriusXM NBA Radio. “First of all, you can’t get rid of a talent like Jaylen Brown unless he asks to be moved. Not to mention the backcourt where he and (Jayson) Tatum have proven their proven formula. So why would you want to make that move? I find it annoying and uncomfortable.”
“Not to mention, I don’t understand, never have, and probably never will understand why ownership, management, and loyalty are so disrespectful and loyal to the players,” Parrish added. “But they only give you loyalty and respect when it is in their best interest to do so.”
While Brown was reportedly the focus of a blockbuster deal for Bucks star Giannis Antetokounmpo, that deal fell apart after Milwaukee dealt the two-time MVP to the Miami Heat.
However, the Celtics have continued to entertain trade offers for Brown — with Brad Stevens considering more seismic roster moves after a disappointing first-round exit at the hands of the Sixers.
Speaking after the first round of the NBA draft, Stevens was not committed to Brown’s future with the Celtics.
“Jaylen Brown is a big part of us,” Stevens said. “I would never predict the future, but every indication and everything I’ve been thinking about over the past few years has been about these people, right? Obviously you never know. But at the same time, the one thing I want to make clear is how much he’s always appreciated.”
“He’s been amazing. He’s been a great teammate, a great person. Whether this career ends 10 years from now when he retires, or sooner, there’s a lot to celebrate. We have a great relationship, an open relationship where we talk about everything. But I don’t want to predict the future. I look at it as if this is our team.”
The Celtics are now stuck in a tough spot with Brown, as the star winger’s value has taken a hit across the league.
“Barring a drastic and unexpected change in the market, the Boston Celtics would have to lower their asking price significantly if they plan to trade. [Brown] “Anytime soon” Sam Amick of The Athletic wrote on Tuesday. “As you have no doubt heard by now, they have requested up to four first-round picks (plus players) for a team that includes the 29-year-old striker.”
