The Memphis Grizzlies traded Ja Morant, their franchise player over the last few years, to the Portland Trail Blazers for Jerami Grant and Kris Murray on Monday.
Morant has always been a very talented lead guard, but he has an unmistakable history of off-the-court incidents, and his attitude is questionable. In addition, his ability has declined over the past couple of years following multiple serious injuries.
While many remain divided on whether it is a prudent trade for Portland, one columnist’s stance sparked a series of reactions.
Why Trail Blazers Fans Are Furious Over Bill Oram’s Ja Morant Trade Column
In an article for The Oregonian, Bill Oram ripped the Trail Blazers for making this trade and even argued that it hearkens back to the “Jail Blazers” era of the late 1990s and early 2000s, when a number of their key players got in trouble with the law and seemed like unsavory characters.
But many on social media made it known that Oram’s opinion was nothing more than balderdash to them.
“The constant negativity from this dude is actually getting insufferable,” one user wrote.

“Who’s reading this [expletive]?” another user remarked. “Bill, we get it. You hate everything about the Blazers & Tom Dundon. The act is old.”
“You’re a clown,” Brady Clark wrote.

“ngl this is perhaps the greatest trade of the last century for us [expletive] are you talking about,” one user bluntly asserted.
“Brother they traded absolute scraps for a 2x all star who’s 26 years old,” one NBA content creator weighed in. “Only problem with this trade is the fit.”

That last reaction perhaps encapsulated the best reason to argue for the flaw in Portland’s move.
The team already has a legitimate lead guard in Damian Lillard, who returned last summer after spending his first 11 seasons in Rip City.
Lillard didn’t play at all this season after tearing his Achilles in 2025, but one has to figure he still has plenty of game left, even though he will turn 36 on July 15.

The Trail Blazers also have Scoot Henderson, a 22-year-old point guard who has shown flashes of promise in his three seasons. Veteran Jrue Holiday, yet another point guard, also remains on their roster.
Where will Morant fit in?
He’s too good to be relegated to being a reserve, but he may not be able to beat out Lillard for the starting point guard spot if Lillard is even about 80% of the player he was prior to his Achilles injury.
Morant is also a poor 3-point shooter and isn’t effective playing off the ball.
New Trail Blazers coach Micah Nori will have to figure this all out over the next three months or so.
