The 28-year-old Haverhill man was killed early Sunday morning in a wrong-way crash on I-93.
The Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office announced Monday that Riley Sergey, a 28-year-old Haverhill man, was the driver killed early Sunday morning when an SUV traveling the wrong way on Interstate 93 in Boston collided with his car.
Authorities said the driver of the wrong-way car, Anton Carvalho, 81, of Somerset, will appear in court at a date yet to be determined. District Attorney Kevin Hayden said the investigation is ongoing and charges will be determined.
He added: “I offer my sincere condolences to Mr. Sergei’s family and friends, and I assure them that the investigation into this tragic incident will be thorough and comprehensive.”
State Police said the crash occurred between several vehicles on northbound I-93 near Exit 15A.
A preliminary investigation found that Carvalho was driving a Cadillac Escalade when he wrongly entered I-93 northbound from Exit 15B.
While Carvalho was driving in the wrong direction, the driver of an Audi A4 and a Honda Odyssey carrying a family of four tried to avoid him and collided with each other, police said.
According to police, Carvalho continued driving in the wrong direction and eventually collided with a Chevrolet Cruze, driven by Sergei.
First responders brought the family of four to a Boston-area hospital, authorities said. There were no updates on the family Monday. Police did not say whether anyone in the Audi was injured.
