Paula Badosa Explains Her Viral Reaction to Stefanos Tsitsipas’ Father

Badosa displayed promising signs ahead of Wimbledon with her run to the quarterfinals of the Berlin Tennis Open, having upset Coco Gauff in the Round of 16. However, it was her candid post-match remarks about her “toxic” split from Tsitsipas that ultimately stole the spotlight.

The Spaniard elaborated on her feelings about their relationship while speaking to the media in London. She addressed the viral clip that appeared to show her giving a stern side-eye to Tsitsipas’ father, Apostolos, during the 2023 Wimbledon Championships, revealing that her expression depicted her true emotions at the time.

“That video has been sent to me many times. My face says it all. It explains a lot of things. That video is the summary! Anyone who has been close to the situation knows what I mean,” Badosa said.

Badosa said she “suffered” through several toxic moments during and after her relationship with Tsitsipas, adding that coming out on the other side gave her the strength to share her experience.

“There were many of them. I suffered a lot for a year, what I and the people around me went through was very difficult, and now, seeing myself well again and with that strength, it also gave me the strength to speak about what I went through — so that many people could connect with that story,” she said.

Badosa emphasized that she had no interest in dwelling on Tsitsipas and his circle, explaining that her only motive was to unburden herself by honestly expressing her emotions about their relationship and eventual split.

“Everything comes out in the end. But he is a person — him and those around him — that I do not want to name any more or dwell on,” she added. “I simply wanted to make it clear, as a person, that I have character too. And when you sometimes let it out and close a chapter, you feel a little freer, and that is what I want: to turn the page and not mention those people again.”

The Spaniard then turned her attention to her upcoming Wimbledon campaign, saying, “I am taking everything more calmly, without putting pressure on myself. And if things do not go as planned, the sun will still rise the next day.”

Paula Badosa will face a tough challenge in her opening match at the grass-court Major, taking on No. 23 seed Emma Navarro, who is riding the momentum of her runner-up finish at the Nottingham Open and her run to the quarterfinals of the Bad Homburg Open.
