Antonio Freeman Shares Optimism on Alex Freeman and the USMNT’s World Cup Run

Rich Eisen recently shared a video of the former Packers star discussing what he has witnessed around the national team.

Freeman pointed to the atmosphere surrounding the squad as a major reason for its success.

“I’ve had the opportunity to be around these guys at their hotel; got a chance to stop by practice and do a piece with a network the other day, and, you know, man, what I see is magic,” Freeman said.

Furthermore, the former Green Bay star said the feeling reminded him of his own championship experiences.

“I don’t like to compare a lot, but the love and camaraderie we had in that locker room when we were winning Super Bowls and making Super Bowl runs,” he added.

Freeman understands what a winning culture looks like. He helped the Packers reach back-to-back Super Bowls in 1996 and 1997, including a 35-21 victory over the New England Patriots in Super Bowl XXXI.

At the same time, he has a unique connection to the current USMNT because Alex is one of its key defenders. Freeman also highlighted the team-first mentality that stands out inside the locker room.

“They all like each other,” he added. “They all get along, and they all just want to win. And they want to win for this country. You know, nobody really cares about individual stats and individual accomplishments. And I think that’s what you saw when you saw Alex make his 2-0 goal is we don’t have egos here. This is the best team in the U.S.”

That mindset showed up against Australia, and Alex was a key part of it.

The younger Freeman put the game firmly under American control in the 43rd minute when he charged forward and powered home a header before halftime. The goal doubled the lead after Cameron Burgess’ own goal in the 11th minute.

During the game, Antonio was in the stands and immediately connected the play to his own days on the field.

“When I used to run a slant route, I kind of had to go boom, boom, boom,” he said, shifting his weight from one foot to the other. “And when he had that guy on the edge on that [goal], he went boom, boom, boom with the ball and just kicked it.”

Then, the entire team played as a unit and protected the advantage the rest of the way, helping the United States secure a 2-0 win.

The win pushed the Americans to a perfect six points through group-stage action and strengthened belief around the squad. As a result, coaches and supporters have grown increasingly excited about the team’s balance, depth, and togetherness entering the Round of 32.
