Windham Clark revealed that his past with Buccaneers quarterback Baker Mayfield was over a woman.
During an appearance on Barstool Sports’ “Pardon My Take” podcast, Clark, who recently claimed his 2026 US Open win, was asked about his previous post on X in which he said “I hate Baker Mayfield” from Dec. 3, 2016.
“I’m trying to decide if I should tell the story,” Clark said. “Well, fuck it. I don’t care that people already hate me. No, it’s not that bad. My PR team is here… They prepared me for everything, and they didn’t prepare me for this.”
“My girlfriend at the time cheated on me with Baker Mayfield. But this is what I’ll say…I’m actually a fan of Baker now. I think he’s a friend.”
“You know, that’s your initial response, ‘Fuck this guy.’ But really, it’s absurd – you know. I’m a Baker fan, no, but the hat is where it came from.
Clark did not mention the name of his ex-wife.
Mayfield and his wife, Emily, have been married since 2019. They were introduced by a mutual friend in 2017 and got engaged six months later.
Clark, a two-time US Open champion, and his girlfriend, Emily Tanner, went public with their relationship at the 2026 Masters, where she served as his caddy in the Par 3 tournament at Augusta National Golf Club in April.
Clark won with a 4-under-par 276 at Shinnecock for a straight-up victory.
Despite being harassed mercilessly throughout the entire final, he defeated Sam Burns by one stroke to win his 126th US Open.
Clarke explained after the win that he understood why fans felt the way they did and expressed regret for his past.
“I did some unfortunate things last year that I really regret, and I’ve said sorry a few times, and I’m still sorry. So, hopefully I can win you guys over in the end,” Clark said.
Clark was banned by Oakmont in Plum, Pennsylvania, after he damaged the locker room at the 2025 US Open. He missed the cut with one putt and took out his anger on a few lockers.
The 32-year-old was reinstated after he publicly apologised, paid for damages, made a charitable contribution and completed his anger management.
