Brewers manager Pat Murphy to get surgery on back and hip

Brewers skipper Pat Murphy could find himself on the injured list in the near future.

Murphy told reporters Saturday that he plans to have back surgery on Thursday and an additional hip procedure during the All-Star break.

Although he did not reveal details about the surgeries, Murphy said the back pain is related to the hip, and that the pain has gotten worse recently.

“I can’t live like this,” Murphy said. “I’m going to have surgery so it’s going well.”

Murphy (67 years old) has been named the best coach in the National League for the past two seasons, and he is currently in his third season in Milwaukee.

Prior to the 2026 season, Murphy signed a three-year contract to remain with the Brewers, making him one of the highest-paid managers in MLB.

This season, Murphy has helped lead Milwaukee to a 45-29 record, sitting atop the NL Central.

Murphy, known for his strict coaching style, called out Brewers relief infielder Abner Uribe for his antics on the mound during a game against the Cardinals in May.

Uribe struck out Cardinals first baseman Alec Burleson to end the eighth inning of Milwaukee’s 6-0 win over St. Louis on May 27, and proceeded to do a WWE-style crotch chop toward the Cardinals dugout.

“I don’t know what got over him. I mean he was an emotional guy, but that kind of thing, that’s not how we do things,” Murphy said. “I was embarrassed by that. Why are we doing that? It’s a 6-0 game. What are we doing there?”

“I love the baby. Believe me, I love the baby,” Murphy added. “There’s so much good in this kid. He’s been so wonderful to us in so many ways, but this is unacceptable. So, whatever happens, you can’t put up with that.”

“For his teammates, for everything, this will not be tolerated, that’s all.”
