Warning: Spoilers ahead! Do not proceed unless you have watched Episode 7 of Season 3 of “Euphoria.”
Sam Levinson gave “Euphoria” audiences “what they wanted.”[ed]When Jacob Elordi’s character, Nate Jacobs, was killed in a “horrifying” scene Sunday night.
After the penultimate episode of Season 3 aired over the weekend, the show’s director made an announcement I spoke to Esquire. About the pressure on viewers to achieve “justice or karma.”
The 41-year-old director remembers asking himself: “How can I give? [fans] What they want, but make it so horrific and disturbing that by the time it happens, the audience isn’t sure they want it?
“It’s like, ‘Oh, you wanted him to get retribution…? OK,'” Levinson told the outlet with a laugh. “That sense of complicity with the audience is always an interesting observation within this kind of larger structure.”
Jacobs in particular died in Episode 7 by being buried alive – and A bit of a rattlesnake.
His body was later exhumed by an excavator.
Levinson hopes the audience will be left with “interesting” questions, such as: “Oh my God, I don’t know. Should it have been better than that?” an act Is it worth it?”
He revealed to the outlet that he initially wanted Jacobs to die in a different way.
“I always loved the movie The Candy Snatchers, where the girl gets buried alive using a pipe as an air hole. So I was imagining Nate would be buried alive,” he said, but then “he had this image of a rattlesnake heading toward this pipe.”
Levinson wanted Jacobs to “make the noise” while the snake “feels movement in the ground.”
At the time, the Emmy nominee was “listening to Otis Redding” with “the windows open” while “driving to Warner Brothers” on “one of those gorgeous days in Los Angeles where the weather was perfect.”
“It’s kind of a funny moment where you realize that not all dark scenes come from a dark place,” he noted.
Elordi, in an interview with HBO that aired after the show, described his death scene as “a great way to go.”
He added, “Nate was someone who made a lot of mistakes and made a lot of dark choices. It’s great to see it all come to where he did.”
The 28-year-old actor described the scene as a “peaceful” scene to film – and a boa constrictor [with] The fake death rattle at the end of her “cute” and “lovable” co-star.
Season 3 of Euphoria premieres Sunday, March 31 on HBO at 9 p.m. ET.
