Officials in Orange County say a significant shift in conditions at the Garden Grove Chemical Facility has significantly reduced the immediate risk of a catastrophic explosion.
In a joint statement from the City of Westminster and the Westminster Police Department, experts described the situation as “very positive.”
The update comes after emergency crews reported a structural problem with a pressurized chemical tank, raising concerns earlier in the week that it could explode.
But authorities now say the situation has improved after a major change was made inside the container.
“OCFA reported that the tank had ruptured and released some pressure, ruling out the possibility of a catastrophic explosion.
City and police officials said: “There was no leak of the chemical. This is a new positive development and science experts are still evaluating this.”
“We do not know when the community will return to normal or when evacuations will be lifted, but we will report an update as soon as it is available. Safety is the number one priority for all of us. Thank you for your patience and understanding.”
The incident remains under active surveillance by the Orange County Fire Authority (OCFA) and environmental safety specialists.
Officials say air quality sensors placed around the site did not detect any toxic emissions, despite the structural change in the tank.
“A crack was discovered at the top of the tank, releasing pressure — not chemicals,” the latest update said, confirming that decompression appeared to have reduced the most severe risk scenario.
Air monitoring equipment at the site and surrounding neighborhoods have so far not shown any dangerous readings.
Despite the improvement, evacuation orders have not been lifted and no changes have been made to the affected areas. Authorities say the precaution remains in place while engineers and hazardous materials teams continue to evaluate whether the tank is completely stable.
A respite care center has opened at the Westminster Senior Center in nearby Westminster to support displaced residents during the ongoing emergency.
For now, emergency managers stress that although the risk of the most severe explosion has subsided, the situation is still considered active and under close monitoring throughout Garden Grove and surrounding parts of Orange County.
