Texas True Crime: Someone She Knew

BEAUMONT, Texas (KTRK) – For nearly three decades, the killer of a beloved Beaumont School teacher has never been discovered.

On January 14, 1995, Mary Catherine Edwards was not answering phone calls. When her parents went to her house to check on her, they found a horrific scene. Her body fell over her bathtub. She was handcuffed and brutally assaulted.

Edwards, 31, was a sixth-grade teacher at Price Elementary School.

Over the years, Beaumont Police and the Texas Rangers have followed one lead after another. Her killer remained undiscovered – until a stunning breakthrough, when a husband-and-wife detective team took a fresh look at the case. There was one important piece of evidence the killer left at Edwards’ home: his DNA.

Investigators teamed up with a private DNA lab in The Woodlands and a genetic genealogist in Louisiana, who used new technology to identify the killer — and it was someone unexpected.

In the latest episode of Texas True Crime, Someone She Knew, Tom Abrahams sits down with the investigators and DNA experts who finally solved the case, after nearly 30 years. Plus, we see the moments caught on camera when the police finally confront the killer.
