Uncertainty over future of Northwest Mall as Texas High-Speed Rail could be in development

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) – The Northwest Shopping Center has been empty for years, and now there’s movement of sorts there.

Near Hempstead Road and North Post Oak Road, there has been talk of something happening at the Northwest Mall that has sat empty for nearly a decade.

SkyEye was flying over the site of the former mall on Thursday, capturing images of crews working to demolish the building.

Over the years, people have confirmed to ABC13 that the abandoned Northwest Mall could become a train station for high-speed rail from Houston to Dallas.

Reality: $64M grant pushes Houston’s high-speed rail to Dallas closer to reality, but still far from complete

Eyewitness News on Friday tried to get answers from anyone connected to the Northwest Mall or what could replace the abandoned building.

The ABC13 team made calls and sent emails to developers, partners and organizations associated with the previously proposed Texas high-speed rail line, which records show are the owners of the former mall site.

There have been reports that recent work taking place here at this location could become a train station.

Waller County Judge Trey Duhon, who is also the president of Texas Against High-Speed Rail, was deeply frustrated

“Publishing this information, which, for lack of better words, is propaganda…that they are about to start construction or begin construction, this is the first step,” Duhon said. “We’ve been fighting this for ten years, and they keep spreading this garbage for lack of better words. It’s a lie. If they’re telling people this project is moving forward, they’re lying to people and lying to their faces.”

It seems like no one wants to talk about what’s going on here at Northwest Mall. It is not clear why there is so much secrecy.

Eyewitness News even contacted someone from Kleinheinz Capital Group, which owns the high-speed rail project in Texas, but they told ABC13 they would not comment.
