HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) – One young suspect is in custody, and at least another is on the run, accused of robbing a convenience store in southwest Houston and shooting the clerk, according to the Houston Police Department.
Eyewitness News was at the scene while K-9 units searched the area and a helicopter flew overhead.
It all happened near the intersection of Woodfair Drive and Bissonnet Street on Thursday afternoon, while officers were searching for the suspects described as “young men.”
In an update shortly after 2:30 p.m., HPD said a youth was arrested and a firearm was recovered. Officers said at least one other suspect has not yet been arrested.
The brazen robbery carried out by the young suspects in broad daylight was caught on camera.
Surveillance video obtained by ABC13 showed the brazen robbery. The photos showed three young men entering the store, then leaving with two items that looked like alcoholic beverages. Seconds later, an employee chased them outside.
A different camera showed the three suspects running away, and at least one shot was heard as the employee ran to safety. The employee, Prakash, told Eyewitness News that the young suspects may be middle school age, and the shots fired may not have been from a real gun.
“It’s an air gun, so I don’t have any problem right now, but if it was a real gun, anything could happen,” Prakash said.
When asked what was going through his head when the shots rang out, the employee said he could not explain. “We’re just thinking about home. Who’s waiting for us?” He said. “My mother is asleep now, I can’t do this.”
The employee said he called the police immediately. HPD said it was close to the area, and the officer responded quickly.
Officers spent the afternoon searching the area and said the investigation was still ongoing.
