Donald Trump’s doctor said the president had an MRI of his heart and abdomen in October as part of a preventative exam for men his age, according to a memo from the doctor released by the White House on Monday.
Sean Barbabella said in a statement that Trump’s physical examination included “advanced imaging” that is “standard for an executive physical examination” in Trump’s age range. Cardiovascular and abdominal imaging were “completely normal,” Barbabella concluded.
“The purpose of this imaging is preventive: to identify problems early, confirm overall health, and ensure he maintains vitality and function over the long term,” the doctor wrote.
The White House issued Barbabella’s memo after Trump said Sunday he would release the results of the test. He and the White House said the scan was “part of a routine physical examination” but had refused until Monday to provide details on why Trump had an MRI during his October examination at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center or on any part of his body.
“I think that’s a great deal of detail,” White House press secretary Carolyn Leavitt said Monday when announcing the memo’s release.
The Republican president said on Sunday during a conversation with reporters during his return to Washington from Florida that the results of the MRI were “perfect.”
“If you want to release it, I will release it,” Trump said.
Trump added on Sunday that he had “no idea” which part of his body underwent an MRI.
“It was just an MRI,” he said. “What body part? It wasn’t the brain because I took a cognitive test and aced it.”
