Arrests made in East Bay murder cold case after 32 years

(KRON) – Two people were arrested for murder on Nov. 6 in connection with a 32-year-old cold case in Alameda County.

On June 17, 1993, 30-year-old Zachary Jackson, a Modesto native, was found shot to death inside his home in an unincorporated area of Hayward. The case remained unsolved until investigators with the Alameda County Sheriff’s Office Cold Case Unit recently developed new leads in the case.

The new evidence “renewed momentum in the investigation,” the Alameda County Sheriff’s Office said in announcing the arrests Monday.

The suspects, 54-year-old Veronica Fonseca and 56-year-old Anthony Foxx, were arrested out of state. They have been charged with murder and are awaiting extradition to California.

Fonseca was arrested by the US Marshal’s Fugitive Task Force at her home in Queens, New York. Fox was arrested the same day by the Sioux City Police Department after leaving his home on foot.

Alameda County Sheriff Yesenia Sanchez said her office is “fortunate to have a wonderful team of dedicated investigators who continue to work tirelessly for the victims and their families in our cold cases.”

The Sheriff’s Office said several different federal, state, county and local law enforcement agencies assisted in this case.
