(KRON) – Layoffs confirmed by the company earlier this week are set to affect more than 1,400 employees across the state and several hundred in the Bay Area. The e-commerce and technology giant confirmed on Wednesday that it would cut 14,000 jobs, amid rumors that the number could eventually rise to as many as 30,000 jobs.
State filings with the Employment Development Department now indicate that Amazon will cut 1,403 jobs in California. Of those, nearly half are in the Bay Area, where Amazon is set to cut 643 jobs at various locations across Santa Clara County.
Statewide, the job cuts are scheduled to take effect on Jan. 26, 2026. All layoffs are permanent, according to the Worker Adjustment Retraining Notice (WARN).
In a memo earlier this week, Amazon said the layoffs were part of an initiative to “operate like the world’s largest startup.” Amazon was founded more than 30 years ago and is one of the prominent legacy technology companies, employing approximately 350,000 people globally.
Amazon’s latest layoffs come as the company implements more artificial intelligence into its workflow.
“As we roll out more AI and agents, it should change the way we do business,” Amazon CEO Andy Jassy said in a June memo. “We will need fewer people doing some of the jobs that are done today, and more people doing other types of jobs.”
