Aurora students get in the Halloween spirit, catapult pumpkins up to 350 feet

DENVER (KDVR) — Aurora engineering and construction students got a chance to show off their pumpkin-throwing skills this week, along with their festive spirit, ahead of Halloween on Friday.

Vista Peak Preparatory hosted its third annual Punkin Chunkin Contest Thursday in an open field north of the high school, where students launched hundreds of mini pumpkins from their own catapults.

About 200 engineering and construction students gathered in teams and worked for weeks to build catapults, launching pumpkins up to 350 feet high, Aurora Public Schools said.

The students, as well as several industry partners, competed with their catapults to win prizes in various categories, such as longest launch, best original design, and even best costume.

Aurora Public Schools said the pumpkins for the contest were provided by Trinity Acres Pumpkin Patch Company, in Byers Township.
