SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) – Two California Highway Patrol officers rescued a rabbit trying to cross the Bay Bridge earlier this month.
CHP officers responded, J. Lundquist and H. Contreras, to a call Sunday afternoon of a rabbit jumping along the raised platform on the east side of Interstate 80 toward Treasure Island.
“When CHP officers Lundquist and Contreras arrived in the area, they jumped into action and approached the stray rabbit,” the CHP said. “The rabbit began frantically jumping away from officers along the right and lane lanes, evading capture for several minutes as it attempted to flee back toward San Francisco.”
Officers eventually devised a plan to catch the rabbit using light boxes. After 12 minutes of trying, officers caught the rabbit and turned it over to San Francisco Animal Control.
“Our new furry friend ‘Hops-A-Lot’ was safely transported off the bridge and later turned over to San Francisco Animal Control for care after officers verbally warned him to continue future hopping activities on grass and not on highways or asphalt bridges,” CHP said.
The CHP publicly thanked the driver who spotted the rabbit and called 911.
