City of Austin receives funds to promote public safety, other Central Texas departments included

AUSTIN (KXAN) — Central Texas police departments, including the city of Austin, have been awarded nearly $600,000 from the U.S. Department of Justice. Small grants for community police development The program, according to the office of U.S. Sen. John Cornyn (R-Texas).

The program seeks solutions to combat crime, increase officer recruitment and retention efforts, and highlight the positive impact law enforcement has in communities.

“Texans’ loyalty lies with our brave men and women in law enforcement, and they deserve to have every tool at their disposal to ensure the safety and security of our communities,” Cornyn said.

Below is a breakdown of the amount given to departments, according to the release.

  • City of Austin – $175,000
  • City of College Station – $174,540
  • Killeen Independent School District Police – $76,213
  • Texas Department of Public Safety – $174,071

“I look forward to seeing how these much-needed resources I helped secure will enable law enforcement to fight crime and improve public safety for communities across the Lone Star State,” Cornyn said, in part.
