SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) — A 20-year-old suspect was arrested after he threw a Molotov cocktail at OpenAI CEO Sam Altman’s home in San Francisco, the company said.
According to a statement from an OpenAI spokesperson, the suspect also made threats at the company’s headquarters. No one was injured in the accident.
The house is located in San Francisco’s Russian Hill neighborhood, down the famous winding section of Lombard Street.
San Francisco police said the incident occurred around 4 a.m. on Friday when someone “threw a destructive incendiary device” at the house, causing a fire to break out in the outer gate.
The suspect fled on foot, but police said his description was sent to officers.
At approximately 5 a.m., officers went to OpenAI headquarters where a man was allegedly threatening to burn down a building, and “identified the man as the same suspect in the previous incident,” police said.
Police say charges are pending against the suspect.
The company said the situation is under control and there is no immediate threat to its offices.
“We greatly appreciate how quickly SFPD responded and the support the city is providing to help keep our employees safe,” OpenAI said in a statement. “The individual is in custody, and we are assisting law enforcement with their investigation.”
The FBI said in a statement that it is aware of the incident and is working with the SFPD “to determine whether any violations of federal law were committed.”
