Before beginning his 2026 tennis season at the Brisbane International, Kyrgios last played a singles match on the ATP Tour at the 2025 Miami Open. He returned to the tour with a wildcard entry into the main draw of the ATP 250 hard-court tournament.

In the first round in Brisbane, Kyrgios faced Aleksandar Kovacevic and lost with a scoreline of 6-3, 6-4. He also competed in the doubles event with Thanasi Kokkinakis, having received a wildcard entry into the main draw.

In their opening match, Kyrgios and Kokkinakis defeated the pair of Matthew Ebden and Rajeev Ram. Their campaign ended in the second round when they lost to the sixth-seeded duo of Sadio Doumbia and Fabien Reboul.

Looking ahead, Kyrgios was scheduled to compete at the 2026 Australian Open but has recently announced that he will not participate in the singles draw, having declined a wildcard spot.

“It just wouldn’t be fair of me to have so many doubts physically to go out there and play some of the best players in the world in the best-of-five and not even be sure that I could back up one round. It’s a bit heartbreaking cause I know that I’m not really able to go out there and do what I used to do,” Kyrgios said.

Instead, the former World No. 13 is expected to compete in the doubles event at the Melbourne Major and may also take part in mixed doubles. His best result in the doubles at the Grand Slam was winning the title in 2022 alongside Kokkinakis, defeating fellow Australians Matthew Ebden and Max Purcell in the final.
