1 in custody in dangerous L.A. carjacking pursuit; 2 outstanding

One person has been arrested after a dangerous high-speed chase by three armed carjacking suspects Wednesday evening in Los Angeles.

It’s not clear exactly when the chase by the Los Angeles Police Department began, but around 6 p.m., Sky5 was able to apprehend the suspects, behind the wheel of what appears to be a newer model Toyota Camry.

The driver was seen racing at approximately 100 mph on Figueroa Street in heavy traffic, approaching other motorists in heavy traffic dangerously and running through an unknown number of stop signs.

Footage from Sky5 showed the car sustained some damage, although it is unclear whether it was sustained during the chase.

At least six LAPD officers remained in pursuit even as the driver swerved into oncoming traffic several times, turning off the wrong side of the road in an attempt to evade police, who were also tracking the suspect vehicle from the air.

The suspects briefly entered heavy traffic on southbound Interstate 110 before moving onto Imperial Highway and back onto surface streets.

Just before 6:30 p.m., the driver stopped the vehicle in the area of ​​Hooper Street and East 14th Street.y Street, where the three suspects bailed out the car that was crashing into the Nickerson Gardens apartment complex in the Watts neighborhood of South Los Angeles.

Initial information, although unconfirmed, indicates that one of the suspects was taken into custody almost immediately, while the other two entered through an open door into the sprawling complex, which includes more than 1,000 residential units.

The LAPD quickly surrounded the building and requested additional units while the search continued for the suspects who were still at large.

So far, no injuries among officers or civilians have been reported.

Sky5 was forced to leave the area during the pursuit.
