Bladensburg, Maryland (WDCWA woman is dead and several other people, including several children, were seriously injured after a car crashed into a child’s birthday party in Bladensburg, Maryland, police said.
Police were called to the scene shortly after 10pm on Saturday in Bladensburg, located a few miles northeast of Washington, DC.
There, police learned that a car was traveling “from the Annapolis Road area” when it struck the crowd that was gathered in a tent in front of a house for a child’s birthday party, according to officials.
Fourteen people were injured in the accident, including Ashley Hernandez Gutierrez, 31, of Washington, D.C., who later died from her injuries.
Officials indicated that among the 14 people, there are eight children between the ages of one and 17 years. As of Sunday morning, six of the children had been treated and released from the hospital, while one child remained in stable condition.
Meanwhile, one adult has been released from hospital while three others are in stable condition, with one “awaiting treatment.” Police initially reported that 11 people were transported to area hospitals, including National Children’s Hospital.
Investigators said the driver who struck the crowd fled the scene after the collision. However, in an update Sunday afternoon, police identified the driver as a 66-year-old man from D.C., who turned himself in.
“Discussions are ongoing with the Prince George’s County State’s Attorney, and criminal charges remain pending against the driver,” a news release from the Prince George’s County Police Department said.
